Outdoor Concrete in a Hot, Dry Valley
Patio & pool deck coatings protect the concrete around your home that takes the most sun. In Dublin, CA that means backyard patios, pool surrounds, side yards and walkways. Wikipedia's climate data for neighboring Pleasanton shows mean highs of 89°F in July and August and rainfall of about 14.5 inches a year, almost all of it in winter. That is a lot of dry heat and UV on outdoor slabs, and plain concrete fades, stains and gets uncomfortable underfoot.
What outdoor coatings have to handle
An outdoor coating gets full sun for months, then winter rain, then sun again. It has to stay bonded through those swings and keep its color. It has to give grip to bare, wet feet around a pool. And it should not get as hot as a dark, glossy floor would. Standard indoor epoxy is a poor fit outside because HomeGuide rates its UV resistance as poor to fair. For outdoor work we use UV-stable systems such as polyaspartic coatings, along with texture and lighter colors.
Cracks in patios and pool decks
Outdoor slabs crack more than garage floors because they are thinner and see more water and sun. Dublin's clay soils add to that. A PG&E environmental report on the Tri-Valley rated soils at its Dublin site as high shrink-swell, so patios can rise a little in wet winters and settle in dry summers. We fill and coat stable cracks. Slabs that have sunk or tilted toward the house need leveling or replacement first, and we will tell you that up front.
Choosing a finish
- Textured flake system: chips broadcast into a UV-stable base for color and grip.
- Solid color with anti-slip: a clean look with aggregate in the topcoat for traction.
- Light colors: tan, gray and sand tones stay cooler in the sun than dark ones.
- Clear sealers: for newer decorative concrete that already looks good and needs protection.
Pool deck safety
Wet bare feet and smooth coatings do not mix. Every pool deck we coat gets a textured finish, and we keep it consistent from the coping out to the edge of the deck. We also keep the coating off pool coping stones and tile unless they are concrete and part of the plan, and we check how water drains off the deck so it does not pool.
Before you call
- Note any sections that have sunk, lifted or tilted toward the house.
- Take photos of stains, especially from rust, leaves or pool chemicals.
- Check with your HOA about allowed exterior colors if you have one.
- Plan to keep people and pets off for the cure time we give you.
Upkeep
Rinse the surface every few weeks in summer, sweep off leaves before they stain, and keep pool chemical buckets off the coating. A worn but bonded topcoat can be cleaned, sanded and recoated without stripping the whole deck.

Patio & Pool Deck Coatings Questions
Can you put epoxy on an outdoor patio?
Plain epoxy is not a great choice in full sun because it can yellow and chalk. For outdoor concrete we use UV-stable systems such as polyaspartic, with texture for grip.
How much does it cost to coat a patio?
HomeGuide lists epoxy on a 200 to 400 square foot patio at about $800 to $4,000. Repairs, texture and UV-stable topcoats affect where your job lands.
Will a coated pool deck be slippery?
Not when it is done right. We add flake or aggregate texture to every pool deck coating so wet feet have grip.
Does a coating make a pool deck cooler?
Lighter colors stay noticeably cooler than dark ones in direct sun. Coatings such as Kool Deck style finishes are designed for this. We help you choose a color that balances heat and dirt.
